Hello! What are some writing prompts you use when you are out of ideas?
Jennifer A. Nielsen
Hi Marianna -
Hmm, I don't think I'm ever out of ideas! But I can give you suggestions that might spark your imagination:
1) Pick a random song from your favorite playlist, listen to the lyrics and start asking questions about what kind of person would say those things, and what that song is "really" about.
2) Browse a list of fun facts, asking yourself how that fact might be used in a story.
3) When you're in a quiet place, pay attention to where your imagination goes. Follow its lead.
4) Figure out what you're doing when you get your best ideas. Is it while walking, in the moments before you fall asleep, when you're bored and alone? Then go back to that place when you need ideas.
5) Read, watch movies, study history, engage in pop culture, visit museums, and live in the world, constantly keeping your eyes open for story. It really is all around you.
Good luck!

Jennifer A. Nielsen:
Hello! I'm Kate. My question is on writing. Currently, I have more than one story idea, and it's hard to pin down the one that I should write. Should I just commit to one idea or wait for the story idea that screams "That's the one!"? If you have an answer that's beyond my question, that's awesome! I need the help :)

Hi, Mrs. Nielsen! I really like your writing, it's one of the reasons why I have wanted to become an author! I have a question—since one Garlin (in The Ascendance Series) is the national currency in Carthya, what would it be if it were converted to a US dollar? Thank you! :)

Before asking my question, I want to say that I was reading THE RUNAWAY KING until a minute before midnight! A good way to spend the end of 2014 and I love the book so far! Anyway, how many books will there be in the Mark of the Thief series? Can't wait to read them--I love your books and Ancient Rome, so both together should be fantastic!
