The phenomenon that Tara describes is lamentable, and in accord with the psychology of being raised against an abusive backdrop of head-in-sand reverence for superstition. As to the question of how this could happen in America -- take a look at the orange surrogate for president, mass homeskooling [sic], belligerent gun-culture and mass shootings, greed and corruption packaged as patriotism, endemic racism, televangelist-promoted bigotries, and America's still abysmal performance on the PISA exams. As to the question of lack of awareness, Americans grow up brainwashed into believing that a social mess that lags far behind other western nations is "the greatest nation in the history of the world".
