Ms. Lowry, The Giver has been in my top five favorite books consistently since I read it in the fourth grade. I feel it's had a hand in shaping my political beliefs and in a way the vocation I've chosen. What inspired you to write the book and did you set out to write the book that The Giver became or did it take on a life of it's own during its composition?

Lois Lowry All books take on a certain life of their own, but with luck that life is in keeping with the original intent. That is true of THE GIVER.

Why did you choose the specific memories in The Giver? Were those ones that you liked the most, and were those ones from your childhood?
