I give myself permission to not write for a little while. After I finished writing Lift, I took a month or so off, just to let the muse have some tea and relax in her garden. After that period, she was ready to go, and I wrote the first in my YA fantasy series, which will be published down the road, after the Flying Ponies trilogy is complete.
Some authors advocate writing anyway, and I have done that. For me, though, realizing that I need some time off to regroup has worked the best for me.
