I'm on the third book now, and without spoiling it for you, I can safely say you can read any of the books out of order and it'll still work; unlike most trilogies. Altered Carbon, the first book is also different from the Netflix series of the same name. Reading the book doesn't not spoil the TV series, or vice versa, in my opinion. They're both enjoyable in their own mediums, with slightly different storylines.

The series is not the book. It changed over half the story so do not follow based on series. Series is enjoyable but they took a lot of liberties with the story.

Absolutely. While personally I thought the Netflix series did a great job of driving home the same mythos and character struggle of the book, the plots are very, very different.
For example: in the book, the Envoys are a special forces extension of the Protectorate. They don't fight rebellions; they put them down. You can imagine how that might affect the rest of the plot. :P
That said, Richard Morgan is a fantastic author, and the ride he takes you on will be over well before you're ready for it to end. I definitely recommend giving Book #1 a go.

Read book 1. Skip book 2.

Going by the synopsis on the release info about season 2 for Altered Carbon, it does not look like Season 2 is even going to follow the plot of the second book... That or it wont start at the same place at least.
That said, the concepts of the Takeshi Kovacs books and universe could allow for different stories it seems. So the series probably doesnt have to follow the books directly... Though I did prefer the flow of the first book more to the first season, even though the first season was still entertaining.

The Netflix series follows Altered Carbon, not Broken Angels. There's no linking in the series to this book so you're good to go.
