Alma Cruz asked:

We never find out about Mia's reason for being the person she was. When and how was she psychologically damaged. I thought this would be revealed. I loved the book very much. Is there any thoughts about Mia's character?

Yolanda I wouldn’t say that Mia is psychologically damaged; she’s just different. She doesn’t need or want to be close to anyone except Pearl, and she lives and breathes her art. She has broken ties with her parents, but it seems those ties were never strong to begin with because they didn’t understand or support her (similar to how Elena didn’t understand or support Izzy).
Sharon Was surprised that Mia was loved by parents during childhood, thought she might have been victim of abuse. They didn't accept her art as a real "job" and didn't support her being surrogate, but seemed harsh for Mia to break w them entirely, Thought her relationship w parents could have been mended after she decided to keep Pearl. Why deny both Pearl and the grandparents the chance to have loving relationship?
