It is Czechia actually (and Czechoslovakia before) The Czech Republic now. CHECHnya is in Russia, this mistake happens a lot, but please don't do it, the difference is huge.
Sorry for being a pain, I am just a Czech who spotted this.

To answer the question, I can realistically see a Slovenian who would address himself as Slovenian in 1987. Yugoslavia was all different nations with different languages and cultures, that were just connected into one Yugoslavia by a political force. Not one common language. Sort of a federation of South Slavic countries.
