Very much real. I will add to Raghu’s excellent answer - I just finished the book and was decidedly happy about how scientific the writing was. Every statement has precision and evidence - nothing loosely stated, no hand-waving.
But be warned that this makes the writing a bit dry, which is why this book has so many negative reviews. If you like/ are used to scientific writing, this book is a delight

Thank you for providing his excellent credentials. A number of popular authors publish on animal behavior and related with no credentials. Unfortunately, these people promulgate misinformation and ignorance about other species among the general public.
