Hi Craig! I've greatly enjoyed both the Daniel Faust and the Harmony Black series, and am looking forward to starting on Wisdom's Grave when I have a spare evening. One question I've always wondered about -- how did you come to give Caitlin a Scots accent? As a Brit, I have nothing against Scots accents in general (though Glasgow ones can be somewhat unmelodious) but why Scot? Why not Welsh or French?
Craig Schaefer
Something I’ve never really gone into detail about in the books (yet): any time you see a demon with a pronounced accent, it’s a habit or a deliberate affectation. Scotland was the first place Caitlin ever saw on her first visit to Earth, and she fell in love with the landscape. She picked up the accent while “going native” in human guise, and though she’s been all over the world since then, she’s clung to it out of tradition and nostalgia. It’s basically a piece of her wardrobe. She’s capable of changing her accent whenever she wants (such as in The Living End, where she momentarily shifts to a valley-girl voice while calling Senator Roth’s office), she just doesn’t want to.
(As for why Scotland in particular, the details pertain to a bit of local history she had a hand in -- which I have to keep secret for now, but it’ll come up in a later book.)
