I really love your books. I'm currently reading the second one. Do you have any tips for characters, or pacing in a story, or how to keep tension high in books?

Know where you're going. I often write (or at least sketch out) climactic scenes first, no matter where they fall in the narrative. Keep the emotional high points in your mind as you move towards them and then preceding scenes naturally acquire pace and tension as they move towards something.

Coincidentally, right after enjoying The Bear and the Nightingale, I read The Stranger in the Woods, by Michael Finkel, a true investigative story about a hermit living in solitude for 26 years in the Main woods. Much of the imagery and descriptions of the of isolation seemed to dovetail well with Vasya's life. It made me curious, who were the actual people or places that you drew upon when crafting this series?

Katherine, would you ever consider doing a book or two on Vasya by the lake? After reading the Winternight Trilogy, it would be wonderful to read more about her abilities and her history as well as her helping her niece to develop her sight... This trilogy was an amazing read - thank you for many hours of enjoyment.
