Goodreads asked James Firelocke:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

James Firelocke Frustration; cash-flow issues; being underappreciated; forking out significant sums to get your book edited, copy-edited, proofread, and designed; failing to convince your friends and family members that you are not insane; competing with a loud, brash culture that encourages potential readers to toss books aside in favor of more lucrative, mindless entertainments; spending vast stretches of your life holed up by yourself, writing thousands of pages that no one will ever read--because they're really not worthy of being read; the never-ending prospect of poverty.

But it's still worth it, because when you write, your mind is free.
