How do you feel about your book being taught in schools, especially when you said in your Newbury Award acceptance speech that the ending is ultimately up to the reader, and most teachers try to dictate the meaning of the books they teach?

Lois Lowry I'm not sure that's a fair description of teachers. I think a lot of teachers encourage their students to formulate their own opinions. I hope so, anyway!

Lois, I love using The Giver, Number the Stars, and more of your books in the classroom with my students. I am curious, though, why you let them change The Giver for the film? Not that it's a bad thing, I'm just wondering what led to that decision. Thanks, and I hope that you keep writing forever!

First of all hi!! 2 years ago luckily I had the oppurtunity to read the Giver for my English course. This was one of the question that came from the teacher. As far as we know you wasn't planning to write and explaining end to the Giver series. But after a long while, you wrote Son as a finale. What did make you change your idea about explaining everything? Fan's pressure? Editor's pressure?
