I second Snow Crash and Reamde: Snow Crash if you’re looking for AR/VR as (sort of) plot device into a broader discussion on American society/consumerism/memetics, and Reamde if you’re looking for VR as the backdrop to a more conventional (by Stephenson’s standards) thriller.
I’ll add ‘The Anubis Gates’ by Tim Powers. It’s a little steampunky with some time travel and mythology. There’s no VR, but there are similar themes, great characters, and lots of interesting twists.(less)
