I loved your recent essay about your journey as a writer of so-called "serious" fiction to fantasy. Did writing fantasy affect your business and professional relationships, too?

Not as much as I expected it to. Certainly at Time it confirmed everybody's belief that I was a huge nerd, but they pretty much already knew that. There were subtle shifts in my role as a critic -- when I'm reviewing a literary novel, there's an understanding that my work isn't directly in competition with it, which is all to the good. There might be some literary circles in which my respectability isn't quite as unimpeachable as it once was ... but I can live with that.

Your Magician series has obviously been inspired by and is a tribute to many famous fantasy series such as Harry Potter and Narnia. The protagonist, Quentin, strongly reminds me of the anti-hero of another well-known series, Thomas Covenant. Were you inspired by Donaldson's Chronicles in any way when writing your novels, and if so, how?

I feel like both Codex and The Magicians capture something about gaming (the Magicians less overtly) that I have not really experienced since the old text adventures of the early 80s. Are you or were you a gamer? How does it inform your fiction? What do you play, now, if anything?

I just read an article that SyFy ordered a greenlight of The Magicians. Can you tell us anything about that? I was actually really disappointed to hear the books were wanted to television. I could see the major networks really bingeing them to life, but I've never been terribly impressed with Fox/SyFy. Have you ever been approached for movies?
