asked:
Do you need to have read the other Harry Bosch books before this one for it to make sense? Essentially can it be ready by itself? Thanks

You can absolutely pick up any Bosch novel and read it on its own. There is no need to read them in order. But once you get started, you'll want to read more.

I agree with earlier comments--Can read this one, or any other, by itself, but there's a long arc across all the books that you don't want to miss. Harry's not the same person in this one as he was in the first, and the change in him is a good part of the total story.

I have read them out of order, came to the series late. After I read the Closers I just started reading any and every Bosch I could get my hands on. I a deep love for the series and understand saying read them in order...I have said "Aha" several times reading.

Connelly does a good job of relating important details about Harry which we first learned in earlier books, so I think you could enjoy this one without the others. But the whole series is a very readable and coherent story about a very interesting character. Do yourself a favor and start from the beginning, perhaps after you've finished reading this one

As others have stated, you can read any of the books out of order. However, after doing so, I went back and read/reread the books in order. References made in later books, while not necessarily important to the current story, were interesting enough to add to the whole picture of Bosch. I’ve quickly caught up and am now waiting for the release of the latest Bosch novel!

I believe once you read one, you will want to go back and read many others. I enjoyed reading them in order. The Lincoln Lawyer is also part of the total story. Enjoyed them just as much. After see the movie I now see Matthew McConaughy as that character when I read the books. All the books are good. I am a real fan!

I've read them in order, I have a hard time reading a series out of order (I suffer from FOMO - fear of missing out, in both real life and fiction series). I came to the party later too, but have greatly enjoyed starting from the beginning. You should read the other books that are related to the series, like the Lincoln Lawyer books, in order while you read these. To me it is the very best way to do it.
Jan
For sure, it's better to read them in order, there are lots of characters coming in and out, and back stories. You get the whole character by reading them all. But the main essential mystery is solved in its entirety in the book.

It may not be a must but it is definitely a loss for any deeper meaning if you don’t. I started out way at the end and enjoyed it enough to read another. But after reading 2 books at the end of the series I had so many questions about who he was and why he was like he was that my unanswered questions began to diminish my appreciation. I went back and started at the beginning and tried to read everything chronologically, including Mickey Haller. Upped the game exponentially, putting it mildly. My absolute favorite, however, is the Lincoln Lawyer series. Much more exciting to me than Bosch.

Do yourself a favor and start at the beginning. Much better that way.

If you can, read them in order.
It's not necessary, but watching Harry grow is important to understanding him.
There's lots of scar tissue.
