What was your inspiration for the Anastasia books. I have loved all your books, and those were some of my favorite books to read over and over again when I was a kid. Thanks for your great books!

The actual inspiration for the character Anastasia was the daughter of the president at the time. Jimmy Carter was president of the US when I wrote the first book, and his daughter Amy was 10. She was a feisty, funny, outspoken kid.

Ms. Lowry, The Giver has been in my top five favorite books consistently since I read it in the fourth grade. I feel it's had a hand in shaping my political beliefs and in a way the vocation I've chosen. What inspired you to write the book and did you set out to write the book that The Giver became or did it take on a life of it's own during its composition?

I've noticed that you've written books from all time periods, with the early-mid 1900's with "Number the Stars" and "The Silent Boy," and the implied future of "The Giver."
