I tend to like HEA tales and this one seemed (by the title) to be the opposite of that, and yet several friends who've read it said it was worth the journey. Every time I start it I see what they mean but I've never been in the right frame of mind long enough to finish it. I've wondered about the deckers term as well. I'd not thought of the baseball parallel at all, but was thinking that it had some meaning related to "the nearly deceased" as a contrast to the dearly departed. (less)
