Kate Foley
Kate Foley asked:

Why are the people who are about to die called Deckers? I feel like I'm missing something really obvious here since the book never explained the meaning behind the term Deckers, but I'm super confused.

Elyse In baseball you're on deck, you're next up at bat. In the book, you're a Decker, your next up to die. That's where I thought it came from.
jule (taylor’s version) a bit late with the answer but i guess some people are still wondering. in the prequel (not a spoiler) it says:
[…] there was a paragraph on the website about how deckers got their name. […] wants them […] to remember that we’re all the captains on the decks of our own ships, setting sail for one last journey.
Christina I thought maybe it referred to the expression "hit the deck," as in "throw your body on the ground/floor."

I think it should have been explained or at least hinted at.
Gayle I was also confused since it wasn't explained. The explanation I came up with is Decker sounds like an abbreviation of DEAth Cast (+er), but "on deck" makes sense too.

Stephen I started this book several times but am finally in hopes of finishing it. The title in some ways is the ultimate spoiler. I tend to like HEA tales and this one seemed (by the title) to be the opposite of that, and yet several friends who've read it said it was worth the journey. Every time I start it I see what they mean but I've never been in the right frame of mind long enough to finish it. I've wondered about the deckers term as well. I'd not thought of the baseball parallel at all, but was thinking that it had some meaning related to "the nearly deceased" as a contrast to the dearly departed.
