Lev Grossman:
Is there a character from the trilogy that you wish we could have spent more time with? Is there anyone who was supposed to be a minor character who took on a life of their own?

Julia was only meant to appear in the first scene of The Magicians, but she kept coming back. She believed the books were as much about her as they were about Quentin, and as it turned out she was right.
It's true of Janet and Eliot too -- they were never meant to be point-of-view characters, but they got too interesting. I couldn't keep away from them.
I wish I could have spent more time with the swordmasters, Bingle and Aral. And Jane Chatwin, who deserved more screen time, and Eleanor from the Magician King. And I wish I could have worked in more talking animals, especially the Questing Beast. I wish I could have written a proper romance for Eliot, and I'd like to tell the story of Asmodeus hunting Reynard ... you'd think after 1200+ pages there would be nothing more to say, but there are so many threads to follow. Lev Grossman:
I typically describe The Magicians as a fantasy epic for nihilists-- Harry Potter or Narnia without the meaningfulness, direction, hope or the (fulfilled) sense of a grand adventure. It’s not a great answer to “what’s it about?” What would you say, if you were trying to explain it to someone who has never heard of it?

Lev Grossman:
Your Magician series has obviously been inspired by and is a tribute to many famous fantasy series such as Harry Potter and Narnia. The protagonist, Quentin, strongly reminds me of the anti-hero of another well-known series, Thomas Covenant. Were you inspired by Donaldson's Chronicles in any way when writing your novels, and if so, how?
