A friend and I were having an argument if Mad Yuri is more Stalin or more Ivan the Terrible in inspiration. Was one of us closer to the mark, or is Yuri an all-original tyrant?

I was just thinking about Alys Vorpatril - admiring her regal air and outstanding competence - it occurred to me that she first appears as Lady Alys, already married, and I cannot think of any mention of her immediate family. Are there highly competent and scary sisters somewhere else on Barrayar? Also Ivan is related to the Vorrutyers - does that mean her maiden name was Vorrutyer?

Bujold, Heyer, Sayers, and Crusie are my favorite re-reads. Some of your writing reminds me of Elizabeth Goudge. Did you read her, especially the lovely children’s book The Valley of Song? There is a lot there that feels Penric-ish.
