I'm conflicted about starting the Harry Potter series as my friend said that it was entirely over-rated and she wouldn't recommend me reading it. But I don't know whether I should really believe her (well follow her recommendation), since it's such an appreciated and loved series by people world wide... ?

Read it. You won't be disappointed. Harry Potter series changed my life. The plots, characters, battles, it's amazing. Lot of people say the books have too many pages and useless passages, but when you finish HP 7 you realize why it all had to be there. J. K. Rowling is a genius. If you like fantasy, you'll love this!

JK Rowling has a good imagination but she is not a very good writer. (I'm referring to skill). She over-explains and repeats things so much that it becomes tiresome. I thought the characters were far more developed in the movies than in the books (with the exception of Neville). In addition, if you have read many fantasy books, you will recognize quite a few plot devices taken from other stories. For example, the horcrux makes you crazy when you wear it around your neck just like the One Ring in Lord of the Rings trilogy. The series is fun but nothing more than entertaining.

I say it's up to you if you want to read and find out for yourself, I have a friend that doesn't like a certain book but I still plan on seeing it for myself.
