AziaMinor asked D.J. MacHale:

What made you decide to write horror stories such as The Morpheus Road series and the T.V. show Are You Afraid of the Dark? And did the show inspire the book series?

D.J. MacHale It's hard to say why anybody writes anything. It's simply what comes out. But if I were to try an analyze it, and I've said this many times before in interviews, is that I enjoy the mystery aspect of horror stories. There's always a mystery that must be unraveled as to why the supernatural force is doing what it's doing. Add to that the fact that you can use your imagination to create the supernatural force, and include jeopardy and tension...it's all pretty great. But I don't feel as though I write horror. Horror usually speaks to violence and gore. I'm much more about tension and creepiness.
