I was just thinking about Alys Vorpatril - admiring her regal air and outstanding competence - it occurred to me that she first appears as Lady Alys, already married, and I cannot think of any mention of her immediate family. Are there highly competent and scary sisters somewhere else on Barrayar? Also Ivan is related to the Vorrutyers - does that mean her maiden name was Vorrutyer?
Lois McMaster Bujold
No, Alys was not a Vorrutyer. Ivan is related to that line through his dad.
Ivan mentions aunts somewhere -- I posit Alys has some sisters, number unknown but plural, less possibly some brothers, living elsewhere, not in the capital scene. Probably with families, hence the sort of cousins one meets maybe half-a-dozen times in one's childhood and barely knows. Yes, I would suspect the sisters are also well-bred and tough-minded.

I just have a question about the sacred animals. What would you say is the real-world example of the "great green bird" used to represent the Mother of Summer? And what is a dog-fox for the Son of Autumn? Fictional animal or their-world name for an our-world animal? What qualities of birds do you personally see as representing the feminine (blue jay, green bird) and canids for the masculine? Thanks :)

As former fellow____________( Columbusite, Columbuser, Columbusonian, etc, etc), I feel like I've seen some interesting and familiar settings in your work, particularly in The Sharing Knife. In the Vorkosigan Saga, I always picture Impsec headquarters as looking a bit like the nihilistic Ohio Historical Society in Columbus. A) Are you familiar with this building? B) If so, am getting it right?
