As I was reading A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW I felt like the writer knew the hotel, the city, the government, all things Russia, so well. Did you live there and if not, how did you unearth so many details about the hotel with its hidden stairways and rooms?

I do not speak Russian; nor have I spent much time in Russia or in the hotel. I "unearthed so many details" by making many of them up!

Thank you for 'A Gentleman in Moscow' - at some points I was cheering for the small victories. Where did you get such accurate kitchen scenes? I worked as a sous-chef in the Canadian Pavilion at Expo 67.
