In The Giver, you created a society that goes to the extreme in order to protect the people and maintain peace. But when it comes to the real world, do you think that there’s a good balance between government protection and personal freedoms? Where would you draw the line when it comes to government control and freedom of choice?

Lois Lowry I suspect that is a constantly shifting line, depending on world circumstances. We sacrificed some freedoms and some privacy after 9/11, for the sake of security.

Is it possible that you could write the in between stories of the characters of the Giver companion novels? I would love to read the love story of Jonas and Kira. The story of Old Benedict and Alys would be sad, but it would still be so incredibly good. I would also love to read the story of what happened after Jonas escaped the Community and arrived at the village.
