Eleanor asked Lois Lowry:

You've said in previous interviews that you write with no intent of social commentary. Yet it's hard not to read 'The Giver' series without thinking about, say, the treatment of women who make choices outside of the boundaries set by the cultures in which they live. Don't the novels carry a desire for change, in ourselves and in our larger communities?

Lois Lowry Those things arise out of the finished book. The fact that they do probably means that they were in my subconscious.
