Lois Lowry:
You've said that you always wanted to write books, but it was later in life when you began a career in writing. Do you wish you would've fulfilled this dream sooner? Or do you feel the life you experienced made your books that much better? What advice would you give young writers who are just learning to balance their need to write with the basic human need to be in the world, experiencing life with those around them?

I think everything fell into place at the right time for me. One does need life experience in order to write, so rushing it is a mistake. Patience is certainly a necessary virtue for a writer or would-be writer.

Thank you for the Giver series! My children read The Giver in 5th grade; now that they are 18 & 21, they still maintain that it is one of the most influential books that they ever read. Personally, I have suggested the series for my own book club as it speaks to all ages. Do you believe that the books (The Giver in particular) are more relevant now than when they were first published? Why or why not?

Hello! I'm thinking about writing my master's thesis on partly The Giver and partly Brave New World set both in a dystopian context. My question is as follows : are the books from The Giver quartet independent from each other or should we read Gathering Blue before Messenger or Son for instance?

Oh glory be! I get to ask my favorite author a question. (This is a Giver question) Why was there a road between all of the cities? When Jonas was riding to elsewhere, there was a long road. Why did it exist, and why was it so unmaintaned? Who would create a road like that?
