Goodreads asked Susan Vreeland:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Susan Vreeland Follow Henry Jame's advice to "try to be the kind of person upon whom nothing is lost." Read, read read the best writing in your area of interest. Copy sentences that are astonishingly beautiful or penetrating or original. Enter them in my reader's notebooks under their categories, such as: people, emotions, nature, big ideas, death and dying, love, weather and seasons. The notebook on emotions has a separate page for happiness, sadness, hope, jealousy, shame, anger, grief, confusion, shock, longing, loneliness, humor, disappointment, fear, etc. When I add a new sentence, I take time to reread other entries on the same subject.
