Yeshua Gold asked Michael Grant:

When you were writing the first book (Gone) did you expect it to be a bestselling series? Also, did you figure it would be 6 books?

Michael Grant I actually sold it to HarperCollins as a 6 book series. I was on the phone with the acquiring editor and she was like, "How many books?" I had no plan our outline, but it felt like six books. That was instinct and experience. Like a carpenter can judge how much wood he needs to build something. It felt like six books worth of story.

As for bestseller? I never assume, I've been wrong too often. Back in the 90's Katherine and I had two monthly series running simultaneously, Animorphs and Barf-O-Rama (under a pseudonym, for obvious reasons.) I thought Animorphs would be this niche thing for smart kids and Barf-O-Rama might be a hit. Dead wrong. Turned out the only people who read Barf-O-Rama were stoned college kids, and Animorphs blew up.
