When I think of science fiction, books about space or time travel or future dystopian societies come to mind. Science is an important focus of this story, although not the only one, and the plot involves a scientific event that hasn't actually happened. But I think Kingsolver was trying to be as realistic as possible and send a warning about climate change. In the author's note, she says that she constructed her novel "within a plausible biological framework" and that although the relocation of the butterflies to Appalachia is fiction, "the rest of the biological story...is unfortunately true."
