R asked Scott Sigler:

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

Scott Sigler Oh jeez, this is a long answer. I'll shorten it as much as possible by giving you an overview of the consultants that review every manuscript I write:
• Two biology Ph.Ds
• A research M.D.
• A chemistry Ph.D.
• A retired Air Force Colonel
• A retired special forces Master Sergeant
• Our Siglerverse continuity editor

And then some. We bring people in based on expertise needed for the content of the book. The consultants are awesome. They don't make the writing easy, but they make the story as factual as it can be while still reaching into the world of near-future science fiction.

My current process is to do about 1-2 weeks of research, then write the first draft, then have the experts review the first draft and tear it apart. I make the corrections they list, re-work anywhere the plot has broken because of those corrections, then dive into the second draft.
