I love this question.
So, I used to write a lot of poetry and a lot of impressions when I was younger. I'd get an inspiration and just pour everything onto a page.
'Republic's Chosen' (Working title: 'Among The Black Thorns' because I love puns) was going to be an emotional novella about the horrors of war and the way people change when they enter the military. That last bit can still be seen to an extent in Marcus's behaviour.
The inspiration for it came from a song - 10th Man Down by Nightwish. I could hear the unease Holopainen (songwriter) felt towards the reality of war and it moved me. The first 25 pages just came pouring out on their own.
I needed to put a lid on it though. A 14 year-old Me would have not handled this book as well.
