Dustin Morgan asked Tim Floreen:

Hey, Tim (: I grew up small-town with ultra conservative morals, so writing LGBT+ novels was always a big no-no. At 18, I came out as transmale and I realized how much I missed writing. My question is: I'm a 1st yr education major but I want to drop out to finish my lgbt+ sci-fi novel. What do you think my best course of action could be?

Tim Floreen Hey, Dustin! From another former denizen of a conservative small town, congratulations on surviving! And that's so cool that you're looking to dive into writing. I know it can be hard to find time to write when you're in the middle of college, but I wouldn't recommend dropping out to pursue writing. Write in the mornings, write on weekends, write during vacations, but stay in school. One thing to remember about writing: it's a wonderful job, but it doesn't pay well (and it often doesn't pay at all), so you gotta do it because you love it, and you gotta make sure you have another means of supporting yourself. All through my writing career, I've had other jobs to help make ends meet. So make sure you have a way to make a living (and getting a good education and a degree is a great way to do that), and also remember that college will help you become a better writer anyway! Best of luck, Dustin, and keep writing!
