Not that it matters, but the movie has the character as a black man. Did I miss that in the book? I Loved the book, couldn't put it down! Guess it's just bothering me that I missed that in a character.

Sarah No, it doesn't matter. I think Ben is very briefly described as being white. There's a part where he's talking about how his face looks now that it's sunburned. I can't remember exactly though.

I'll also say that the movie doesn't look like it's going to be the book in movie form. It seems to have taken inspiration from the book but not everything will be the same. Ashley's character seems different. The trailer I saw showed none of her humor. Her leg injury is vastly different; she's able to walk. There were several other scenes that weren't in the book.
Octothorpe Reader Leora K I pictured Ben as a black man throughout the book and somewhere he referenced, "dancing like black men do make fun of white men dancing..."... but no it doesn't matter at all
Susan I never saw the movie, so I totally pictured them as both white and never read anything to the contrary all thru the book. There's no reason they couldn't have been another race, but I think if they had been different races, that would have come up, somehow.
Margaret Lind Actually, as I have said elsewhere, because I saw the movie first, I pictured Ben as a black man and Rachel as a mixed race woman all the way through the book and there was nothing to dispute that except one comment that ran through Ben's mind about a "blue popsicle," which you would have to read for yourselves. For that matter, Ashley could also have been a black woman or a mixed race woman, but because her character (with a different name Alex) was white in the movie, I pictured it that way...
