Since I live in the eastern Atlanta suburbs, about a mile off US 78, I twitched a little when I saw Garrison Oaks was just off the highway. And seeing that you're local: Did you have a particular piece of the real 78 in mind?
Scott Hawkins
Nah, nowhere in particular. The Garrison Oaks neighborhood as I envision it borrows a couple of houses from the neighborhood where I grew up, but that was SC, not ATL.
That being said,
During the time I was writing Mount Char, my now-wife and I had separate houses, though we spent most of our time at my place. I'd get over to hers like once a month, if that. Often enough that I was familiar with the route, not so often that I had every detail committed to memory. One day right before the book was done I was heading over there for something and I noticed a subdivision sign that said Garrison Oaks.
Up until that point I'd been fairly sure I made the name up, but evidently I'd been driving by and it stuck in my subconscious or something. In case you're wondering, I did drive in to take a look around, but there were no suspicious resemblances.

Dear Scott,
Before my question, I'd like you to know that I'm very grateful that you answer questions. You already answered some questions related to mine, but what were your inspirations for Ablakha and his story? So the world is in it's 4th age in the story, so I'm curious to know what inspired you to say that. Who are the Emperor, Duke, and the rest of Father's enemies? I'm bursting at the seams with questions!

My question is fuck you, pal. It shouldn't be legal for someone's first book to be so unnaturally good. I've had my share of page-turners, but your book hacked my perception of time to bits. Errands were ignored, sir. I hope you find the inspiration for a second Char novel, because you've planted a seed that's ripe with potential. Was there a particular thing that fuelled your inspiration for this novel?
