Dear Scott Hawkins: No pressure, but I've been eagerly awaiting your next novel since I read Mount Char a couple of years ago. Is there a sequel or some other unrelated-but equally-brilliant fiction on the horizon?
Scott Hawkins
Hey Lisa,
First off, I appreciate the support. Thank you.
At this point I've stopped making promises, but I really think I'm getting close. The reason for the delay is that the book I originally intended to follow Mount Char sort of died on the vine. I lost about a year working on that.
Anyway, I've been working on another book, entirely unrelated to Mount Char. I think it's getting close to ready.
It's about a mathematician named Josie who lives in the woods with a bunch of dogs. One day the dogs start talking to her. This isn't the huge surprise for Josie that it might be for someone else--there's a family history, and it's happened once or twice before. The thing is, this time the dogs seem to know stuff.
If you can imagine Looney Tunes doing a feature-length cartoon about a noir detective version of Scooby-Doo investigating the Exorcist, that's sort of the ballpark I'm aiming for.

Thank you, sir, for providing something so original and unique. Loved it all and I especially appreciated the refreshing details, e.g. not resurrecting characters like the cool President (a lot of -especially American- authors would, I believe). A question, if/when you find some time: Why did Carolyn feel she had to kill all the librarians? Those that posed a threat I understand, but Peter, for example? Others?

Some serious questions!
- What does Margaret actually _do_? Is she useless in the normal universe?
- Why did Margaret not find Adam Black in the underworld? (I forget what you named it)
- A super pedantic point: You mention at one stage a catalog of 'mercy', was this just meant to be part of the healing catalog?

So, I read Library a while back and fell in love with it. Then later discovered the audiobook and have listened to that more than a few times in subsequent years (it's easier to "read" when I can listen and do other things at work!). I'm wondering how do you feel that Hillary Huber did in bringing the story to life and giving voice to characters? Especially Carolyn?
