Really liked these books, but there are plenty of series that surpass this. I would agree the First Thomas Covenant series, ie first trilogy. The Rift War saga and the subsequent Mistress of the Empire. Not to mention if you are really ambitious the Wheel of Time. Finally, though not "fantasy" Dune is the best.

Gormenghast is better. Kingkiller is just as good. And then the classics like Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Not much else, though.

This is a molehill of a story compared to LoTR or Wizard of Earthsea or Thomas Covenant. But it sure is "clever" and "gritty".

I just finished it as well and wish it hadn't ended - I was sort of biding my time on the last book. I would say that Thomas Covenant chronicles would be a solid recommend. If you consider that there are 11 books I think - it's a long uphill hike - but well worth it.

That's a darn good question. I just finished book 3, and I'm already missing Logan, Glokta, West, Jezal, and all the others. I hate morning the loss of characters you grow close to when reading books in a series.
I'm moving on the the 3 stand alone novels that are set in the same world as The First Law. The third novel has Logan Nine Fingers in it, even though he's supposed to be much older.
