The Rift…moreReally liked these books, but there are plenty of series that surpass this. I would agree the First Thomas Covenant series, ie first trilogy. The Rift War saga and the subsequent Mistress of the Empire. Not to mention if you are really ambitious the Wheel of Time. Finally, though not "fantasy" Dune is the best.(less)

The main draw of the series is more about complex characters, political intrigue, and a gritty world. There are a few moments of sexual content, but they’re usually more implied than graphic, and they're not central to the plot. So, if you're looking for a fantasy series with a lot of romance or explicit sex scenes, this might not be the right pick. But if you enjoy morally grey characters and darker, more realistic fantasy, I think you'll really enjoy it.

The other thing is that a main, viewpoint character is vocationally a torturer, and there are many scenes where he plies his trade. The descriptions are not particularly graphic, but do get into the mechanics of it.

There's also an unpleasant execution, and some pretty horrific battle scenes, but I don't think they fall into what you're trying to prepare for here.(less)
