At least three major events occur on this site, all involving Dexter. I listed them below for those who finished the book.

SPOILER ALERTS: Anna first meets Dexter as an "almost" 12- year old at Manhattan Beach (w/ her father and Tabitha). Later, when Anna is 20, and going by the name Feeney, she gets Dexter to take her and Lydia to Manhattan Beach, an outing that temporarily enlivens Lydia.

Side note: Could it be this moment of rebirth for Lydia or Lydia's death shortly afterwards occurs simultaneously as guilt over abandoning Lydia crashes over Eddie, thousands of miles away and crippled with hunger and exposure to the elements? While stranded on the boat, he's accosted by auditory hallucinations that include Lydia's ramblings about "papa kiss" (the tender kiss Anna sent Lydia through her father) and the sea.

Finally, Dexter and Anna have their tryst on boat that's harbored on Manhattan Beach. (less)
