Inbal Manhattan Beach is the venue of the very first scene of the book, where the 3 protagonists meet for the first time, and that meeting impacts the rest of their lives. That's the significance of the title.
Russell Bittner Geographically speaking, Manhattan Beach is a peninsula at the southern end of Brooklyn (which is part of Long Island), NY. The one side of it that joins Brooklyn does so right alongside Brighton Beach.

I know. I walked the length and breadth of it the day before yesterday.

Why Ms. Egan took this little peninsula for the title of her book, however, still remains a mystery to me -- but that could be because I'm only a little over a quarter of the way through it.
Angela At least three major events occur on this site, all involving Dexter. I listed them below for those who finished the book.

SPOILER ALERTS: Anna first meets Dexter as an "almost" 12- year old at Manhattan Beach (w/ her father and Tabitha). Later, when Anna is 20, and going by the name Feeney, she gets Dexter to take her and Lydia to Manhattan Beach, an outing that temporarily enlivens Lydia.

Side note: Could it be this moment of rebirth for Lydia or Lydia's death shortly afterwards occurs simultaneously as guilt over abandoning Lydia crashes over Eddie, thousands of miles away and crippled with hunger and exposure to the elements? While stranded on the boat, he's accosted by auditory hallucinations that include Lydia's ramblings about "papa kiss" (the tender kiss Anna sent Lydia through her father) and the sea.

Finally, Dexter and Anna have their tryst on boat that's harbored on Manhattan Beach.
