Isla asked L.E. Modesitt Jr.:

I have been reading your novels for many years...one thing I have observed is that you do a splendid job of building to the climax of the story and then within 5 pages the Book is over. Is this done consciously or is just a function of your writing style? Which ever is fine by me, I've just always been curious.

L.E. Modesitt Jr. I'd have to say that it's more a function of my writing style since, in most of my books, the pieces converge. When they all meet at the end, there's usually not that much more that the reader needs -- or often wants -- to know. I've been accused occasionally of having too brief an anticlimax. My tendency not to dwell excessively on what happens after matters are resolved may be because I feel that once "all is well" [or as good as it's going to get], it's time to leave the party before the words subside into boredom.
