Goodreads asked Nancy Lawrence:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Nancy Lawrence Mary and the Captain was born from one single idea. I had a scene in my mind of a Regency-era soldier trying to get home for Christmas, who, instead, is forced to spend Christmas Eve night at an inn. Originally, I thought that scene might develop into a short Christmas story, but I was wrong! It's funny how the right combination of characters, settings and circumstances have a way of taking over a story! As the story developed, my soldier met someone at the inn with no family or home of his own. Now my soldier is faced with a dilemma: follow his own heart and continue on his journey home to see his family on Christmas Day; or right an injustice and bring the joy of Christmas to someone less fortunate. Soon, that little short story I originally envisioned grew into 400+ pages and a book I thoroughly enjoyed writing.
