My advice would be to research your story once the idea comes to you. Take plenty of notes. The small details are important for example the color of the characters eyes. I had her one time a blue eye, then later green eyes. Good thing I caught that.
Write what you know too. It makes it a lot easier, but the research will just add to your story.
