Evelyn Hugo was my first book of yours that I have read-and I absolutely loved it! I can’t wait to read all your others! What I loved most about the book was highlighting the different types of love and marriages. Where did you find the inspiration for all seven of Evelyn’s husbands? And the other loves of her life?

Taylor Jenkins Reid I don't normally outline my books before I write my first drafts but with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo I knew I needed to know who the seven husbands were before I started writing.

I did a lot of prep ahead of time for how Evelyn's career would carry out and, thus, what sort of man she would need in her life at each moment.

Some of her husbands were purely original, others were inspired by certain archetypes of Hollywood. The crooner, the director, the studio exec, etc.

And, of course, for Evelyn's true love, I had to be thoughtful about what sort of person could truly complete her. Who had things she never had? Who represented all that she herself wanted to be but believed she never could?

I had an entire notebook of material before I even started writing.
