Emily asked Taylor Jenkins Reid:

What films did you draw on as inspiration for Evelyn's more avant garde films in the book?

Taylor Jenkins Reid I've always been a big Cary Grant fan and so all of his 50s and 60s films that I watched in high school and college made great inspiration for Evelyn's time in the studio system. Films like "The Philadelphia Story," "Bringing Up Baby," "His Girl Friday," etc.

And I think the most direct line from Evelyn's career to actual Hollywood is when she has her come back in French New Wave. I did a lot of research of those films ("Breathless," "400 Blows") and what directors were doing back then in order to craft a realistic film for her to bounce back in.

Lastly, Evelyn's controversial movie "3 A.M." was very loosely inspired by the Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie movie "Don't Look Now." The two movies have very little in common in terms of plot but the public's reaction to "Don't Look Now" at the time gave me a jumping off point to create a scandal for Evelyn in her world.
