Ellen asked Taylor Jenkins Reid:

Do you have a special power that allows you to write characters that are so real and relatable? (If not, is there anything you do to ensure that they come across so well?)

Taylor Jenkins Reid I love this! Thank you, what a compliment!

I spend the majority of my time on a book focused on *who* the story happens to. I try to make sure that the characters and their reactions feel honest and real, even if they are in heightened circumstances.

I think a lot of that comes from being fascinated by people. I've always engaged with the world with a laser focus on the people around me and why they say or do the things they do. I can be a little over analytical (my husband would probably like it if I stopped obsessing about people's motivations all of the time.) But it means it's a skill I've been honing for years. What makes people tick?? I'm always trying to answer that question for myself and the people around me and so it's natural to then apply that to the characters in my work.
