Daniel Quinn I think you automatically formulate precepts/maxims that help you be the person you'd like to be. For example, if you think you should be more patient with, say, your little brother, you will automatically become more aware of losing your patience with him and will automatically remind yourself of your need for more patience. Not much help here, but I think everyone has his/her own internal mechanism for this (or needs to develop one!).
