Can anyone recommend a book like this, but without the christian spirituality? I'd like to recommend a secular version to my friend.

The problems this book addresses are very common for women, Christian or not. However, the only real answers that will promote real change and help all of us (and I include myself because God's still working on me) are found in God. Being a Christian and pursing religion are not at all the same thing. Being a Christian is, in fact, the complete opposite of being into religion. It's not uncommon for someone struggling in these ways to be needing relationship, accepting, someone to really care about them. There is only one way to experience these things perfectly is and that is to find them in a relationship with God. People will always fail us. Being a Christian is about having the one and only relationship that will never fail us.
Does that mean that we go through life without suffering? No, it does not. God may allow hard things to come our way but He never causes them; nor does He ever allow them without a purpose or without the intent to use them for good in our life.
People often don't want anything to do with God because they see "religion" with God but turning to God sets us free, not the other way around. There is freedom found in turning to God, there is hope in turning to God, it's not about what you have to give up, but what you have to gain. (less)
