The book explains how it happened because in a murder case people feel better putting someone away so that they can believe that the murderer is off the streets and that they are safe. Does it make complete sense to everyone? No, but to that jury it did. It happens all the time. The book also shows Boady at the end explain to Lila what had happened and Ben's plan. He explained that getting convicted wasn't in his plan but thats how the jury went.
