Just a comment? Wonderful book. If it doesn't touch the reader through art, it touches one by one's attachment to their home, if not through home, it touches through family roots/birthplace, if not thru roots, it touches through lost love, and if not through love & loss, thru the human spirit and its fight to survive and thrive, and if not thru the human spirit, it touches one with Kline's linguistic skill & talent.

Hi Jill -- this is such a lovely comment. You made my day. (Apologies for not responding sooner; I just discovered this page.) A Piece of the World is the most difficult book I've ever written, for many reasons. It was hard to write about real people; I had to create drama and movement out of a somewhat static story (Christina barely leaves her house) and carve hope out of what some might consider a sad or even hopeless situation ... so it means a great deal to hear that it touched you. Thank you!

Is this book fiction? Did you know that the woman in the painting had Charcot Marie Tooth a neurological disease? I have it. It affects the feet and hands then the arms and legs. It is the most common inherited neurological disease in the world 1 in 2,500. It is still rare. SO many people go undiagnosed. There are quite a few people in the UK with it . There is a CMTUK facebook page I think.

I just finished A PIECE OF THE WORLD. Now I am reading everything I can find about the subjects of this very good story. Thank you for brings to life the complexities of relationships, being handicapped, and unmet desire. This book has given me a lot to ruminate about and has opened my eyes to a world I have known little to nothing about. Did Walton Hall ever know of the painting? Thank you.
